And next…

June 25th, 2009

I didnt leave this morning because…I was lazy after a nights drinking!
So I met Vstas in the Coffee lounge (again with the coffee thing…Im gonna open a milk bar…) and then went to the hill of crosses, turned out at 140 miles north of here so was bit of a trek because the roads are pretty boring to get there, but as i got there the skies opened into beautiful blues and fluffy white clouds…in time for the photo shoot!
Interesting but religious again…seems everything to view here is religious in its content somewhere along the line, and of course has the obligertory Russian horror story attached to it about how it was to be destroyed to more evenly fit the Russians aims during their second occupation.
Spectacular that so many people believe in the healing power of the cross to place it on this hill…well its more of a small mound really.
So tomorrow is Trakai now and hopefully Ill see the castle and then go out on a boat around the lake that also has a jazz band on it. then head to Poland for the prehistoric forests and Ive found a 2 music festivals in the streets of Hungary I think ill keep in mind.

Probably be a while until my next post so heres wishing you all plenty of smiles and sunny days until then.

all fixed, me and Shirley

June 23rd, 2009

all is well, Shirley and I have been fixed, all bar her front brake lever.

the guy here did a really good job, shame i lost the fixing bolt!

Vystas has been an absolute hero, not only has he crossed mongolia and stuff but he takes me to the garage and back but via all the public footpaths, gardens, parks and sometimes we go by road!

Had dinner with him and the spectacularly beautiful and sweet Katrina and then back to the hostel.

Tonight is the shortest day and that means a party here in town, should be a fun night with street entertainment and stuff.
Midsummers night was on saturday and the same kinda party.

I think I might have to go north again to see the hill of crosses, apparently it 2 hours north by bike then come back to Trakai.

Speak soon
love yer

Tartu to Vilnius

June 22nd, 2009

opps. accidents are meant to happen to warn us that we arent paying enough attention to life.

well maybe.
I wasnt paying attention anyway.
The roads up to Tallinn were major roads so i had the bright idea to go via little roads when heading south, just for fun.
That morning I (unusually) woke up feeling miserable and sorry for myself.

The little roads in Estonia are sealed for 2 or 3 miles then they dissappear into rubble. while i was enjoying the ride to begin with I got just a little too cocky and entered a left hand bend at about 55mph. Shirley fishtailed and went back and forth since i had ridden too close to the adge of the road and was in the dirt the trucks throw up which is deeper than the usual stuff. I came a cropper. lowsiding the bike across the road.

Amazingly as the bike went down I jumped over the front end and managed to run away from it… you know those runs when you feel your legs are going faster than they are designed to go and your loosing control of them and any minute your going to go headlong…like running down a steep hill too fast… well that was me, while it sounds cool i was actually flailling arms sweat and jelly legs.

The bike went through the dirt and the right pannier ripped off at the mountings.
3 cars went by and one stopped to help stand the bike up.
I bungeed it back together and made Vilnius.
After a few hours it was getting late so I was in a bad mood!
The intemediate town I could stay in was nothing more than a dirty industrial village so I carried on…then calmly found a lake along side the raod so pulled off andset up camp for the night.

Next morning my arm hurt and I wondered if it was broken or fractured, Nurses Pond and Welling told me to get it checked and stop being a wimp respectively.
I woke feeling miserable and sorry for myself. (unusually)

I was in Vilnius by 10am and amazingly found a hostel with courtyard parking and I was 200m from the doors when I stopped!

Vystas is Livius’ friend (Livius from Tallinn) who crossed Mongolia on a KTM (never dropped it once - Instantly hated him!!!!)
Vystas is helping me fix the panniers and showing me the town and is being an alround star!
Great friend and is incredibly helpful with an astoundingly beautiful and sweet girlfreind…makes me remember the good days when you find a girl that really adores you and your worlds revolve around each other in dizzy love.
They are great together and funny, they have been sensational and taken me out to see the sights and eat the local food etc.
We English are pityfull at being friendly to foreign folk by comparison!

I intend to move on soon 2 days maybe, first to Trakai for a day then down to Poland….must remember banks dont like my credit card in Poland….

The moral is… if you see a stranger, offer them a helping hand in the same way these freinds here do for me.

Funnies from Tallinn

Movin’ on

June 12th, 2009

Well the time has come to move on from Tallinn.

Move on Monday going to Tartu heading south to Vilnius and then to the Prehistoric Forests in Poland aiming to get into Hungary and look for Dracula eventually.

Then? Who knows…

Going to miss the sillyness but maybe things have been just too soft recently.

There are lots of very well off student types that call themselves travellers, but they also talk about going cruising through the Adriatic and also manage to drink every night.

Students must have changed. They also all wear designer clothes…very different in my day!
If you ask them, mummy sends out bank transfers once a month…
They think they are doing it alone…astoundiing really.

Some thoughts from the walls here:

  • When life puts stones in your way, make something nice out of them.
  • Buying love is as stupid as loving money
  • If money is freedom, why doesnt the wind have pockets?

I’ve bought new boots, they aren’t great but I hope they will do for now.

Enjoy the movies we made and the pictures I’ll send…The quality isn’t great but they are funny…

Don’t have much more to say at the moment, but will do soon I hope.

Love to you all.
